Looking back at my time being single, I wish I spent my time more wisely. Instead of wondering when I was going to find my future husband, I wish I used my time to learn new skills. I encourage single women to learn from my experience. Use this season of being single to bless your future life. Take your mind off of being single with this list of skills to learn.
COOKING
Now is a great time to learn the basics of cooking at home. Master a few recipes and put them in your tool belt.

GARDENING
This one is hard to get hands on experience if you don’t have a place of your own. So instead, do a lot of research. Buy some gardening books. Learn the basics. Here is a list of some great gardening books:
- Floret Farm’s Cut Flower Garden
- The Flower Gardener’s Bible by Lewis and Nancy Hill
- The Old Farmer’s Almanac: Vegetable Gardener’s Handbook
CROCHETING, KNITTING, AND SEWING
This new skill is very rewarding, and I will warn you, very addicting. I’m still new at these myself, but it’s so much fun to add knit projects for your future home:
- Blankets
- Dishcloths
- Kitchen Towels
- Rugs
- Curtains
- Pillow Cases

LEARNING THE BASICS
A broad topic, yes, but it’s very help. Let me explain. An easy place to start is in the kitchen. Sourdough starter, baking cookies, even bread. Also, taking proper food temperatures, learning how long to cook rice, potatoes and vegetables. Other basics include cleaning the house, and changing a light bulb to name a few.
What are some basic skills you want to learn before getting marries? I’d love to hear some. Feel free to comment any below.

You’re speaking my language! I am now acquiring these skills with three kids in tow, wis I would have done them when younger.
A beautiful perspective! I wish I would have mastered many of these skills at a younger age too. Thanks for this inspiring article.
So many single young women waste these valuable years on consumption and vain pursuits. You can avoid many newlywed tears and heartaches by preparing yourself. Great reminders here!
